Mendel found that the four different factors came together in four different ways and produced four types of offspring:
C, D and E are all red because they contain the dominant red factor, but F has no dominant red so it reverts to being a purebred white.
Now, in each pair of qualities there will be a dominant and a recessive factor: for example tall dominates short, and in the seeds yellow dominates green.
Peas produce two crops a year, so the possible variations became enormous, but, as Mendel found, the variations were always in the ratio of three dominant to one recessive. The important point for a scientist was that it was predictive. Mendel could actually predict what his results would be. Darwin was never able to do that with his law of natural selection, and that was to prove a major weakness.
